This little painting, Lucy's Allotment Dahlias is This little painting, Lucy's Allotment Dahlias is off to Three Storeys Nailsworth for the @autumnarts25 Taster Exhibition, to hang alongside a piece from all the artists taking part. My studio will be open on the 18/19th and 25/26th of October, with new work, a warm welcome and almost certainly cake! Lots to look at, and it should be tidy! Hope to see you there!
Just a glimpse of my residency @theoldlockupgaller Just a glimpse of my residency @theoldlockupgallery in Cromford, Derbyshire last week. I'm so grateful to Rachael for her kindness and hospitality. I tried to stay away from social media while I was there, spending the days exploring and absorbing some of the history and character of this lovely place. Creativity-wise there were too many possibilities at first; what materials to choose, where to go, what to focus on, how to make the most of a week all to myself?! After a couple of days of trying to do too much, I found a rhythm; responses began to emerge. Now that I've had a few days to reflect, it was a really valuable time to be quiet, to try things out and to simply play with materials and ideas, and explore somewhere steeped in industrial heritage. Exploring the Mills took me back to my Art A-level Architecture project, investigating cotton mills near Manchester, cast iron columns, brick vaulting, fire proofing and all. Cromford is blessed with a wonderful bookshop, @scarthinbooks and a chocolate shop for treats. A lovely walk and draw this afternoon with @susewa A lovely walk and draw this afternoon with @susewalk down between the bridges on the Severn estuary at Aust. A wonderful, atmospheric place under a great sweep of sky, the peace only slightly marred by the distant heavy drum beat carried on the wind from an afternoon rave (we guessed) across the river! @walking_theland were on a #firstfridaywalk from Penarth on the Welsh shore of the estuary. We couldn't be there, so we did our own remote version on 'our' side of the river, looking at the reeds, the strata at Aust Cliff, and the ghostly industrial archaeology of the old Ferry jetty, with the older of the two Severn bridges soaring above us. We gathered a small harvest of blackberries on the walk back from Aust Cliff. I have had to take the show down a day early as at very short notice I have to be in Bristol tomorrow morning to get my car fixed. It will take a few hours. Thankyou to everyone who came to see the exhibition @lansdownhall and bought a painting, brought interesting conversations and stories or wrote lovely comments in my book. It's been a great week in a lovely venue, and a real privilege to be able bring my work from past years out of the racks for an airing! Special thanks must go to @paulb1606 for wielding a screwdriver, filling and painting the gallery walls while I packed paintings, and helping to hang it all in the first place! If you have bought a painting, I will deliver them in the coming week, once they are carefully packed.

After a long and weary day, the show is up, the do After a long and weary day, the show is up, the doors open at 10am tomorrow morning. @lansdownhall is a lovely space, but if it wasn't for @paulb1606 I'd still be there now! My attempt at the end of it - after sweeping the gallery floor - to video the exhibition was an embarrassing failure, so I shall have another go tomorrow. There are more than 40 years of my painting life in the exhibition; it may well be the last public airing for some of the paintings. My enthusiasm for creased paper and tricky fabrics is a constant over the years. If only! Shouting kids, barking dogs, walkers chatting at the tops of their voices, a man who threw himself in the lake and splashed about, shouting to someone on the bank, a helicopter taking off behind the trees, what sounded like all the aircraft from the Air Tattoo roaring overhead after the weekend's events; it was bedlam! This beautiful Monograph by Louise Pilditch arrive This beautiful Monograph by Louise Pilditch arrived by yesterday's post; thankyou, Louise for sending it. The colours, creatures and light of the Far North - it makes me want to go to Svalbard. We've been to the North Cape, which was extraordinary, but how amazing it would be to spend some time in such a remote place. Louise writes about the shock of a warm wind in this icy landscape; at the North Cape the temperature was around 20° when we were there, and they were very worried by it. Louise's Monograph is a record of an incredibly fragile ecosystem in great danger, and her paintings capture that landscape with great sensitivity. #Svalbard #landscape #Norway #landofice #farnorth #landscapeartist #arcticcircle #monograph #climatecrisis #fragileworld
The hasty fruits of our recent trip to Italy, flyi The hasty fruits of our recent trip to Italy, flying into Naples, and coming back by train. A concertina sketchbook is a lovely thing! I couldn't do much drawing, despite my good intentions. It was a busy trip - we walked 120km on pavements in 12 days! 1st image is the view from the roof of the building on the first evening; Vesuvius looming over the bay of Naples. Next; the complicated yellow church we could see from the roof, built in layers. Then the view from my seat on the train to Florence, whizzing along at 250kph. One quick drawing of the Florence skyline, and lastly the Old City of Zurich, a bit of a dog-leg on the way to Paris and the Eurostar to London. Every European train was on time, sleek, fast, clean; some of them even supplied free train snacks. 🚄 It was only when we got to Paddington that we discovered that the last leg from Swindon to home would be a Rail Replacement Bus! 🚍 #Italy #Naples #Florence #Zurich #Paris #eurostar #Paddington #railreplacementbus
