Artist in love with oil paint, the Gloucestershire landscape and the lovely smell of turpentine. www.cheltenhamgroupartists.org

This beautiful Monograph by Louise Pilditch arrive This beautiful Monograph by Louise Pilditch arrived by yesterday's post; thankyou, Louise for sending it. The colours, creatures and light of the Far North - it makes me want to go to Svalbard. We've been to the North Cape, which was extraordinary, but how amazing it would be to spend some time in such a remote place. Louise writes about the shock of a warm wind in this icy landscape; at the North Cape the temperature was around 20° when we were there, and they were very worried by it.
Louise's Monograph is a record of an incredibly fragile ecosystem in great danger, and her paintings capture that landscape with great sensitivity.

The hasty fruits of our recent trip to Italy, flyi The hasty fruits of our recent trip to Italy, flying into Naples, and coming back by train. A concertina sketchbook is a lovely thing! I couldn't do much drawing, despite my good intentions. It was a busy trip - we walked 120km on pavements in 12 days! 1st image is the view from the roof of the building on the first evening; Vesuvius looming over the bay of Naples. Next; the complicated yellow church we could see from the roof, built in layers. Then the view from my seat on the train to Florence, whizzing along at 250kph. One quick drawing of the Florence skyline, and lastly the Old City of Zurich, a bit of a dog-leg on the way to Paris and the Eurostar to London. Every European train was on time, sleek, fast, clean; some of them even supplied free train snacks. 🚄
It was only when we got to Paddington that we discovered that the last leg from Swindon to home would be a Rail Replacement Bus! 🚍

A busy painting day yesterday down by the Severn. A busy painting day yesterday down by the Severn. These are now in the studio for a bit of tidying up and finishing off - and some bug-scraping, but it was glorious being by the river for the turn of the high tide at Elmore in the morning and then to catch the ebbing tide at Longney in the afternoon. The icing on the day's cake was hearing a cuckoo calling, loud and proud on my way back to the car. It's years since I last heard one.

Out this morning playing with a fineliner and wate Out this morning playing with a fineliner and watercolours. Stancombe plantation and the landscape around it draws me back again and again; the fineliner forces me to commit to the marks - I was bored with pencil! I have @asamandadraws of @walking_theland to thank for a nudge towards using a permanent mark; it's been a long time.
It's good practice for a trip to Italy in a few weeks' time. I can't take much by way of materials, so getting up to speed with the pen could solve a problem!

@oneofmanycharity Update: The Draw is now closed; @oneofmanycharity

Update: The Draw is now closed; I will list the names that have emerged from the hat on Wednesday. Thankyou to everyone for your comments and interest. 💖

Here's my offering for @oneofmanycharity , hot from the baren, still needing to dry!
Springtime allotments on A5 paper. I've got 6 of these available. I'm sure you know how it works; you ask if you can have one, and in return, you make a donation to a charity of your choice, either the amount you would pay for a print or whatever you can afford - ever grateful to
@johnapedder for coming up with an idea of simple genius.
If there are more names than prints, they all go into my Sorting Hat and I make a a random draw.
I will list the lucky recipients on Wednesday19th. You then send me a DM with your address, let me know which charity you're supporting (it's always lovely to know) and I'll post them out to you.
The charity I'll be supporting this time around is the Maggie's Centre in Cheltenham, whether or not I win any 1/many's myself.
On International Women's Day, here are the only 2 On International Women's Day, here are the only 2 photos that survive of my great grandmother, Hannah Bastow, née Reynolds, a 'four loom weaver of Worsted (fine woollen cloth) in Lister's Mill in Bradford'. Taken on a day out on Filey beach in the early 1920's, she wore the clothes of another era, and I love her magnificent feathery hat. The family story was that she was quite fierce and independent-minded. Her daughter Louisa, my grandmother went to Aberystwyth University - remarkable in itself for the child of a mill-worker. My daughter Hannah is called after her.

At Last! Out with the kit, on the river bank, tryi At Last! Out with the kit, on the river bank, trying to get to grips with the Paint, the Zest-it, the brushes, the palette knife and the light. Hopefully remembering how this works, after a very long 4 month gap!
This winter was hard on energy, morale and everything else, with many things demanding attention. I feel I've emerged from hibernation into the light! Whether or not the painting's any good - and I have my doubts, it was about the process; Just Do It!

I've been very quiet on Instagram lately, because I've been very quiet on Instagram lately, because I've been working on this as part of @walking_theland Lines of Inquiry project, investigating the Honeybourne Line urban path that links Cheltenham Spa station to the Prince of Wales stadium and beyond, where it gets a bit wilder! My concertina sketchbook will join work by 14 wonderful artists working in a variety of disciplines including film, photography, print, drawing, natural dyes in an exhibition at the Hardwick Gallery, @uniofglos from 3rd to 27th March. Events are planned around the exhibition, including a Friday Walk and Private View on 7th and a Symposium on 21st March.

The new camera goes up on the drainpipe today. We'll position it so it 'sees' more of the sky, and try and make sure it stays watertight.
